Neighbourhood Support aglow in new gear

There will be no missing Neighbourhood Support coordinators in their fancy new hi-vis jackets, as they call on neighbourhoods across Hastings and Napier to unite.

Five hundred of the high visibility jackets have been handed to the organisation’s volunteers this month.

Barry Jones, Neighbourhood Support Hastings coordinator and chairman, approached local Real Estate Company Tremains to sponsor the jackets, in a bid to improve the profile and visibility of Neighbourhood Support coordinators.

“Our aim is to encourage more streets to form neighbourhood groups to help make their neighbourhoods safer. When we are cold calling to organise new streets to join Neighbourhood support, having something to wear that identifies us as coordinators is very important so we are grateful that Tremains has been willing to help sponsor these.”

The sponsorship come in the run up to New Zealand’s official celebration of neighbourhoods, on March 19 and 20. The first Neighbours Day Aotearoa was held in 2009, following an international trend of similar celebrations. The initiative, run by a consortium of charities and organisations, aims to “be a catalyst for thousands of Kiwis to connect with their neighbours and turn their streets into neighbourhoods”.

“It is a perfect time for our organisation to don our new jackets and help make our neighbourhoods more connected and safer,” says Mr Jones.

Tremains Real Estate managing director Simon Tremain, says Neighbourhood Support fits with the community values of his company.  “We like to put our money back into helping or doing something for the local community, whether that be through sponsorship of events such as Tremains Christmas Lights, Tremains Street As Awards and Tremains Art Deco, or helping local community organisations such as Neighbourhood Support.”

The aim of Neighbourhood Support is to provide opportunities for neighbours to work with each other, the Police and other community organisations such as Civil Defence and the Fire Service to enhance the safety and wellbeing of the community.
