Light no fires: Weather too dry

People are being asked not to light any outdoor fires over the coming weekend and into next week as the wind rises, the rain stays away, and the temperatures continue to hit the 20s.

The exceptionally warm and windy autumn conditions across the whole region make lighting outdoor fires in the rural areas of Hastings, Wairoa and Central Hawke’s Bay “very, very risky”,  says Hastings District Council rural fire officer Trevor Mitchell.

Temperatures are forecast to stay in the 20s until at least mid-next week.

“We need people to put off lighting any outdoor fires,” says Mr Mitchell.

“Of particular concern are fires that have been put out during the week which might still have hot embers in their base. With this wind, the chances of them reigniting have to be high.”

With the lack of rain, grasses are very dry, meaning a stray spark could do a lot of damage, he said.

“If you have had a fire recently, please, please, check it carefully to ensure it is completely cold. While the hills appear green, there is a lot of dry grass and autumn leaves about, sparks and embers can easily be blown into these starting an uncontrolled fire.”

People who see fires they believe are dangerous are asked to call the fire service using the 111 emergency phone number.
