Wattie's helps Keep Hastings Beautiful

Wattie’s is on board with helping Hastings become even more beautiful. The rear wall of its premises off Kenilworth Road was constantly being defaced with graffiti up until a couple of months ago.

Now it is a crisp clear façade, with a brand new fence to protect it. Next up will be trees planted along the fence and then a mural, if all goes to plan.

The graffiti problem was not obvious to Wattie’s, as it was not an aspect of the building staff or management often saw. But after being contacted by Hastings District Council staff, Wattie’s management immediately offered to clean it up and had the wall painted and then fenced the boundary so it could not be re-targeted.

Now it is ready to help plant along the inside of the fence and is planning a mural featuring the produce that grows so abundantly in Hawke’s Bay, and on which it relies for its business.

The rear of the buildings along that stretch are seen from the A&P Showgrounds and the cycle trail running from Hastings to Clive. They are also very visible to rail passengers on the few times a year they pass, including at Art Deco Weekend.

“It is a real pleasure to be able to do our bit to make our city as beautiful as it can be. I think winning the national Most Beautiful City Award last year made everyone appreciate just how lucky we are to live here, and put even more effort into making sure it stays that way,” said Wattie’s site manager Malcolm Reid.

A planting day is being organised for June 5, Arbor Day, dependent on Trans Rail permissions to enter the rail corridor.
