New pipe for troubled Te Mata stretch

A temporary water pipe will be laid along Te Mata Rd starting tomorrow, replacing part of a 50 year old main that has ruptured several times over the last two weeks, says Hastings District Council.

Work on a permanent replacement will begin as soon as possible after that, once design work is complete. The pipe sits between a gas main and three large power cables, therefore finding a replacement corridors is not as simple as Council staff like.

Group Manager of Assets Craig Thew said while the pipe, laid in the 1960s, had not previously been a problem, it was known to be nearing its end of life.

“It has become brittle and as we make a repair in one place it weakens at another point.”

It has reached the stage where the cost of replacement makes better economic sense than continuing to patch it, he said.

The plan is to run a temporary pipe line along Te Mata Rd, between Simla Avenue and Guthrie Rd to isolate the problem, before starting on a permanent new main pipe along the same stretch.

In the meantime, the pipe breaks have caused a low level of contamination in the water supply. While our contractor’s take every care to minimise this risk, the number of failures in a short period has contributed to this problem.

To combat any risk the water supply has been treated with chlorine since late Monday. That is expected to be discontinued by Thursday if all testing comes back clear.

Any questions on the work can be directed to Hastings District Council. Phone 871 5000 and ask for Dylan Stuijt.
