Flaming Matariki market coming up

Fire will be a big part of the one-off winter Hastings City Night Market celebrating Matariki next week.

The Hastings City Mall will come alive from 5pm until 8pm on Thursday June 9 with street food trucks, free entertainment and arts and crafts.

“Highly Flammable from Wellington will wow the crowds with their fiery displays, five-piece rock show Generator will have market-goers dancing all night to songs they know all the words to, and our Hastings Young Enterprise Scheme teams will have their incredible results on show,” says Hastings City Business Association manager Susan McDade.

“Big attractions for the kids will be the Imagination Playground big blue play blocks and a Lego building competition being put on by the Hastings City Art Gallery which fits in with their new Lego exhibition.”

The range of foods will be “a true gastronomical delight” including burgers, Asian and Indian-influenced food, pizza and amazing ice cream and donuts.

“Wandering from stall to stall until you find something that takes your fancy is half the fun. The locally made arts and crafts hidden amongst the food stalls are also popular with market goers; there’s always something unique to be found.”

Last year’s Matariki Night Market was very popular, says Ms McDade. “If last year’s market is anything to go by, it will be a strong draw card for all the family to wrap up warm and get together with their community for an evening of free fun and entertainment. The event really brightens up winter when we all tend to hibernate a bit.  We are expecting a busy night.”

The market will open at 5pm on June 9 in the city centre, by the fountain.
