Getting creative with wool, dance classes, ‘zine’ workshops, costume making and, of course, book reading, are all on the list at the Hastings libraries for the winter school holidays.
The staff at the three libraries - Hastings, Havelock North and Flaxmere - know it can be a bit harder entertaining the children during the winter school holidays when colder temperatures make outdoor activities that bit more difficult, and so they have gone all out to provide a huge range of things to do.
At Hastings Library the mid-year break starts with making costumes from Lego on July 12 and moves onto songs, crafts and stories the next day, followed by movies on July 15.
In Havelock North the holiday starts with a Minecraft Session on July 11, onto story time and ‘Doodle Day’ on July 12, with dance and movement on July 15.
In Flaxmere superhero designing is first up on July 12, coding class on July 13 and songs, crafts and stories on July 14.
Mum and Hastings District councillor Jacobi Poulain is encouraging mums and dads to make the most of the activities on offer. “As the mum of a young one I know it can be hard to keep them amused when the weather isn’t great. It’s a great opportunity to make the most of our libraries and there is an amazing range of programmes across crafts, reading, screen time, and play. Looking at some of these events, it’s also a perfect opportunity to give the kids a chance to try something different from their usual interests.”
Check with your nearest Hastings library for the full list of activities.
