Hastings District Council election nominations

council building 4

Nominations closed for candidates for the 2022 Hastings District Council local government elections at midday today.

Only some wards and community subdivisions will be contested where there are more candidates than vacancies. There will be no election for Mayor, the Mōhaka ward, or the Heretaunga ward.

Aside from the Poukawa community subdivision, the other three rural community subdivisions will not be contested with these vacancies filled with one candidate apiece, and neither will the Flaxmere Licensing Trust.

Along with the Poukawa subdivision, there will also be elections for the Hastings-Havelock North, Kahurānaki, and Flaxmere wards, and the Takitimu Māori ward.

Hastings District Council chief executive Nigel Bickle congratulated Mayor Sandra Hazlehurst and the other councillors who were unopposed – Tania Kerr, Alwyn Corban, and Ann Redstone, as well as Maraekākaho community subdivision member Jonathan Stockley, along with the candidates for whom no election is required; Tūtira community subdivision member Abby Morley and Kaweka community subdivision member Isabelle Crawshaw.

“I look forward to working with them, along with the other councillor candidates and Rural Community Board members, as our council continues to build on Hastings’ strengths and make it an even better place to live, work and play.”

Aside from those seeking re-election, 24 additional candidates were putting their names forward to serve as councillors or community board members over the next three years.

“It’s fantastic to see this high level of interest from people standing to represent the community. Now I look forward to there being equally strong interest from the community when it comes to voting.”

Voting papers will be sent to all eligible voters from Friday, September 16, 2022.

Voting will close at 12 noon on October 8, 2022.
