Waste Minimisation Fund applications open

Pregnancy Help Hastings and Napier branch executive committee chairperson Vickie Hope talks cloth nappies

Attention waste minimisation advocates. It’s time to get your application into Hastings District Council’s Waste Minimisation Fund. Applications are now open until Friday, November 4, 2022.

Each year, the fund gives out a total pool of up to $20,000 across the successful applicants, providing support to community groups, individuals, businesses and schools based in the Hastings district.

Groups need to be involved in local waste reduction projects and initiatives with aims and outcomes that benefit the Hastings community. The Large Waste Minimisation Fund is available once per year for applications over $2,000.

Last year ‘Pregnancy Help Incorporated’ was one of the fund recipients. The group used the funds to establish a modern cloth nappy bank at their centre, and organised an event to launch this fantastic community resource.

Other recipients included Hawke’s Bay Environment Centre who were using the funds to design a new service with a mobile wash station, cutlery, coffee cups and crockery to enable greater wash and re-use during events.

Thrilled to have the support of Hastings District Council, Pregnancy Help Hastings and Napier branch executive committee chairperson Vickie Hope encouraged others in the community to think about putting in an application.

“I would recommend applying for this fund, it’s going to take a lot of education and funding to support people to reduce their waste,” she said.

And that’s exactly what the fund has been set up for - helping enthusiastic and creative groups who are trying to divert waste from going to landfill.

School groups, teachers, charities, businesses, individuals; anyone in the Hastings district can apply for the Waste Minimisation Funds.

The funding comes from Council’s national waste disposal levy funds – a government charge for all waste going to landfill.

The process is easy and the team is happy to chat and answer any questions before you hit send.

“We found the application process easy, and it was great to be able to go and meet with the team to discuss our application prior to submitting it,” Vickie said.
