Building bridges to reconnect communities

My HastingsApril Bridge

Amid the destruction caused by Cyclone Gabrielle, our district’s roads and bridges were severely impacted – with 16 bridges destroyed and many roads affected by slips and drop-outs.

Council’s roading teams have approval and design underway for nine new bridges, with site clearance underway for another three.

Members of our rural community were instrumental in getting immediate access open. It looked like every working piece of machinery was being used to open up the closed roads. Without the efforts of our farmers, local contractors, and Council’s own contracted workforce – the pace of getting access would not have been so rapid.

One project that was nearing completion at the end of last month was the building of a Bailey bridge over the Mangaone River at Rissington. Here multiple teams have contributed to installing this access that will make life easier for residents.

Find out more about Bailey bridges here.
