Welfare teams on over weekend

The Red Cross’ and Civil Defence info hub tent will be on site and manned in Havelock this weekend.

The tent is a place that people can go to for information regarding the water situation in the village.

It is on the lawn outside the Havelock North community centre on Te Mata Rd, and will be open Saturday and Sunday from 10am to 3pm.

Over most of this week nearly 30 volunteers have been door knocking and responding to calls, making sure people have access to information and basic needs. Sanitary pads have been one of the main requests; things like nappies. They have also been manning the information hub and been stationed at the three high schools to support students and staff.

The community has really come together, says Hastings District Council incident welfare manager Alison Banks.

A huge range of businesses and individuals had turned up to help deliver everything from water, soup and tinned food to toilet paper and nappies.

Age Concern Havelock North in Middle Rd is also open tomorrow, from 9am to 1pm, and has free water soup and canned food for those in need.
