Bulk water for food businesses

All of the food businesses and motels in the Havelock North area have received bulk bottled water supplies.

Mayor Lawrence Yule said while the town water is safe to drink once boiled, it is difficult to boil the amount of water needed to feed large numbers of people.

“We want to do everything we can to get the hub of our village back to normal; to give our people confidence to get out and about to our cafes and restaurants.

“This is about building confidence in what is the heart of the community.”

Council staff and Havelock North Business Association members started delivering the containers of water on Saturday and carried that on over the weekend and into Monday.

For village residents, water tankers rolled out again today after they were re-sterilised, re-tested and re-filled over the weekend. All came back with clear tests on Sunday and they were driven out to a number of car parks in Havelock North from 8.30am today.

Across the rest of Hastings the town supply is safe to drink straight from the tap.

The supplies in Havelock North and Hastings (which includes the supply to Flaxmere and Bridge Pa) are both being chlorinated until further notice.

Water tankers available to the public in Havelock North are in the car parks of Te Mata Primary School, Havelock North High School, Lucknow Primary School, Havelock North Primary School and the ANZ Havelock North bank.
