Movers and shakers up on our walls

The first of eight portraits of Hastings’ “movers and shakers” went up yesterday (August 30); starring artist Dick Frizzell.

Depicting famous, infamous, quirky and intriguing characters from the district’s history, the works by artist Adrian Thornton will go up on walls around town in the coming weeks.

Each of the Hastings Icons portraits is accompanied by a sign with a short biography of the person it represents and a QR code people can scan with their smartphones to find out more.

The first subject, Dick Frizzell, is a Parkvale Primary, Hastings Intermediate and Hastings Boys High School, old boy, who has gone on to become a internationally recognised artist and graphic designer. HIs portrait is in Karamu Rd, on the side of the Humanities Building.

Thornton has worked with writer Jess Soutar Barron on the project that weaves together portraits and biographies.

Soutar Barron says the idea is for people to discover the works - and the icons they celebrate -  as they walk through the city.

"We are excited to tell these stories to Hastings' locals, they're icons we can all be proud of,” says Soutar Barron. “All born in Hastings, some are well known already, others are a little more mysterious and obscure.

“We hope that the portraits will help to raise awareness of these key figures, who have all been high achievers in various fields and contributed to the unique history of our city.”

The first series of eight portraits, printed on poster stock and glued to the walls of buildings, will be based on blank walls from the clock tower through the east side of Heretaunga Street. Subsequent series of Hastings Icons will be posted on walls to the west of the city centre.

The project is supported by Creative Hastings,Hastings District Council and the Hastings City Business Association.
