Free have a go at FlaXrock Gym

Explode and seido karate are in the fitness mix in Flaxmere and, as the suburb’s community centre and gym reach a year old, more classes are about to be added.

Community centre-run self defence and hip hop classes will start mid-May and hip hop classes are timed for June/July.

An open on May 2 will give residents who haven’t yet had a go the chance to try classes for free.

Flaxmere Community Centre acting centre manager Jacqui Davis said all FlaXrock gym classes would continue to cost $2 for non-gym members; a price that had seen participant numbers swell.

Members, who paid a $30 joining fee and $10 a week, could attend any FlaXrock gym classes for free.

Explode classes, particularly the wahine version, had proved “really popular; everyone just loves the instructor Katie Nathan”, said Jacqui.

The open day will give everyone the chance to try gym classes without forking out any cash. “They will find out just how much fun keeping fit can be – and in winter they’ll keep so much warmer jumping around this great space,” Jacqui said.

The day would also kick off a month when anyone could sign up with the gym without paying the $30 joining fee.

“The centre belongs to all of us; it’s our space, so I’m keen to get as many people as possible to come and see what it offers,” Jacqui said.

“More and more people are joining all the time – local sports teams are starting to use it as a training facility – but there is plenty of room for more.”

The main foyer is getting a revamp before the open day – with new seating, plants and a big screen television showing the times of classes and community notices.

The facility’s two function rooms are being re-named to give them personality. One will be the Harakeke Room, the other the Talanoa Room. Both were proving popular, but again there was the potential for more use, Jacqui said.
