Poppy Place for Haumoana

Another Poppy Place is about to be celebrated in Hastings – this one is Memorial Park Avenue, leading to the Memorial Arch in Haumoana’s Memorial Park.

The unveiling of the Poppy Place sign will be at 11am on October 28, just after the opening of the newly revamped playground that is on the Haumoana Memorial Park.

Poppy Places is a national remembrance project set up in 2014 to ensure those who lost their lives in war are never forgotten. The New Zealand Poppy Places Trust says: “The Poppy is the most powerful and easily recognised symbol of both courage and sacrifice that we have as New Zealanders . . . [Poppy Places are about marking] places where our hero’s contributions and their stories are linked to the physical via the simple placement of a poppy.”

On Haumoana’s memorial arch is a plaque with a list of soldiers from the area who died in the first and second world wars: Christoffer Jensen; Thomas Mullins; Alfred Reeves; Claude Bishop; Robert Bradshaw; Robin Caskey; Wilfred Krebs; Robert McCarthy; Maxwell McCormick; John Reeves; Blake Scott; Alfred Secker; Basil Shaw; Douglas Stanley; GA Struthers; Jack Taylor; Ian Thorburn; Donald Tibbles.

This latest Hastings Poppy Place adds to a number of others already marked with poppies: Elliott Cr, Upham St, Nigel St, Ngarimu St, Selwyn Rd and Crichton Pl (all in Havelock North); and Russell St and Kain Pl in Hastings. More streets and places are on the list to be added to the programme.
