Splash pads open; restrictions continue

The splash pads in Flaxmere Park and Cornwall Park will be back on from this weekend –7am to 7pm on Saturday and Sunday and then 3pm to 7pm on weekdays.

A great effort by residents has seen just over a 20 per cent reduction in water use from the peak use last week. This reduction in water use means that the reservoir water levels are recovering.

The situation is not back to normal yet so water restrictions remain in place, however the savings so far mean the community splash pads can be turned back on.

“Council is constantly reviewing the water levels and use and looking at what we need to do,” said Hastings mayor Lawrence Yule.

“By Sunday any remaining drizzle is forecast to clear and it will be hot so we want to be able to let the kids cool off in what are two of the favourite play areas in the district.”

He expressed his thanks to residents for heeding the Hastings District Council call to limit discretionary water use and asked that people continue to be very careful with water.

Last Thursday a ban on all automated garden watering systems, including sprinklers, was put in place. That still applies, with residents asked to limit outdoor use to hand held-hoses between 6am and 8am, and 7pm and 9pm.

The water status will be reviewed by staff next week “but in the meantime given gains thus far and the significant community effort Council will re-open the splash pads for the weekend,” Mr Yule said.
