Awards celebrate Hastings' beautiful gardens

Sue Watson and Kelly Scannell both have a bonus $2000 each to spend on their gardens, after they took out the two top positions in this year’s Tremains’ Spring Spruce Up Awards.

Sue won the Open Category with her Tomoana Rd front garden. The category recognised people who had a consistently beautiful garden. She decided to enter after noticing her garden looking particularly stunning one morning.

“I was leaving for work and thought gosh, my garden is looking beautiful. Then when I got to work someone told me about the competition, so it was perfect timing.”

Kelly took out first prize in the Before and After Makeover Category for her newly minted Beresford St garden. And the difference was substantial as the photos show.

“We’ve done a lot of work to complete the look of the house recently so I thought it was worth a shot entering – and I’m stoked with the end result,” she says.

The awards, sponsored by Tremains, encourage and celebrate people who are doing their bit to help keep Hastings beautiful by taking pride in their properties.

The awards were presented at Malo in Havelock North on Wednesday night, by Hastings mayor Lawrence Yule and Tremains director Simon Tremain.

Second and third place in the Open Category went to Ruby Atkins (Louie St) and Christine Beal (Sylvan Rd). In the makeover category, second place went to a group of residents for their sterling efforts to beautify Ohiti Rd, (off Taihape Rd) and Ken Bateman for his Fitzroy Ave property.

The Ohiti Rd residents, who all live down one rural drive, pulled together to tidy up the entry to their homes. Fences, gabions, artistic letterboxes and plantings all make a statement that is a far cry from the standard non-statement rural driveway entrance.

“It is great to see our rural residents take on this challenge – it’s a reflection of the fact that all parts of our district can be made the most of. It also shows what a difference can be made by working as a team. They’ve all been in this together, holding meetings and making the decisions together and splitting costs, with each resident doing their bit to contribute whether it be planting or fence construction etc. And the letterboxes, which are very impressive, were made by them too,” said Mr Yule.

Tremains is very keen to support initiatives that encourage community pride, said Mr Tremain.

“Our family has been in this region for generations and we are very proud of it. We are happy to be part of things like the Spring Spruce Up Awards which encourage people to take pride in their homes and celebrate those who have made such amazing efforts.”
