Hastings residents urged to continue water conservation efforts

Hastings District Council is urging residents to step up their water conservation efforts.

Councillor Tania Kerr says “If we don’t get rainfall soon, some river flows will fall to critical levels, so it is now extremely important that everyone becomes more active in reducing domestic irrigation. Current daily consumption is still in excess of levels that would demonstrate that people are adhering to the current restrictions.”

Tania Kerr says “If the current dry spell continues and further voluntary reductions are not seen, then we will have to consider banning sprinklers and moving to hand held hosing as a further measure to minimise excessive use.”

“I am sure that the majority of residents are taking water conservation seriously, however some are either unaware of the current restrictions or are simply ignoring our request. Council will increase surveillance of water use to target those who are not complying with the restrictions as a means of educating people to be more efficient in their water use,” Tania Kerr says.

You can find out how much water is being used daily around the district from Council’s water useage monitors. They can be accessed online

Tania Kerr says “Water saving is not rocket science but it does start with individuals. People living in rural areas of Hastings District employ water saving practices12 months of the year, as their supply is from tanks. Small changes to the way you use water can add up to big savings.”
