Chlorine-removed taps on move

A shift towards the car parks and the addition of more taps will make the Hastings chlorine-removed water supply in Civic Square more accessible.

The tap was originally sited to be close to the car parks on Eastbourne St. However the moving of the city centre bus stops had seen the nearest car parks removed and the walk between car parks and water tap double – difficult for people carrying bigger water containers.

Users had also asked Hastings District Council to come up with a way to make filling larger containers easier.

The work will start on Monday and take about three weeks to complete, from laying concrete and drainage, to installing pipes and a treatment facility, to placing the water stations.

The original filling station will be moved to the edge of Civic Square, nearest the five minute parks on Warren St. A second filling station will have a shelf and four taps, all at different levels ranging from 750mm to 1250mm above the shelf to take taller containers.

The water supply for the taps is sourced from the main town supply so is chlorinated but goes through carbon filters to remove as much chlorine as possible. It is UV treated after the filtering process. Two sets of filters are being installed to ensure water can continue to be supplied while cleaning and maintenance is carried out.

The work will start on Monday [September 11]. Residents can continue to take water from the temporary taps attached to the filter box at the old site while the work is carried out.
