Get a free bike check

Are your tyres pumped, brakes up to scratch, and chain and crank under control?

With the weather warming it is time to hit the cycle ways. In Hastings the iWay team has partnered with four bike shops across Hastings to provide free ABC bike checks to help make sure everyone cycles safely.

The ABC stands for Air in tyres, Brakes working, and Chain and crank operating as they should be. Any repairs identified by the checks will need to be paid for by the bike owner. Getting a free check also puts the cycle owner into a draw for prizes, including vouchers and bike accessories.

The stores involved are Avanti and The Hub in Hastings, and Cycle Nation and Revolution Bikes in Havelock North. The checks can be done during the shops regular opening hours from this Saturday (September 16) to October 31.

Hastings District Council acting mayor and keen cyclist Sandra Hazlehurst said cycling has many benefits.

“We are very proud of our iWay development over the past seven years. Getting our community on their bikes has so many positive benefits. While cycling improves our health and wellbeing, by leaving the car at home we are also improving our environment by reducing our carbon footprint, saving money and at the same time enjoying our beautiful district.

“Hastings has some of the highest sunshine hours in New Zealand, we have beautiful cycle ways and iWays and our district is mostly flat; all perfect reasons to get on our bikes this summer.”

The iWay programme started in Hastings in 2010 after Hastings District Council submitted a proposal to the New Zealand Transport Agency to become one of two model cycling communities in New Zealand. The proposal was accepted and Council received $4 million to start building urban cycle ways and promote cycling. A second round of funding in 2012, $11 million, allowed the network to be extended and further cycling promotions to be run. In 2015 Napier took up the iWay programme and it is now overseen by a regional governance group.

Including iWay paths and Hawke’s Bay Regional Council’s and Rotary cycle trails, there are more than 220 kilometres of easily accessible cycle ways across Hastings and Napier.
