Whakatu Arterial Link Update - 20 February 2017

Heavy rain over the weekend has had a slight impact on the Whakatu Arterial Link project however it is not expected to make a difference over the life of the project.

The link route which will provide a new road between State Highway 2 (SH2) and Pakowhai Road is going to plan.

The project manager advises us that work has now started on three main sites; on State Highway 2 (near the Napier Rd intersection); in Whakatu (near the rail crossing) and at the Pakowhai Rd end (in the Karamu Stream area).

At the SH2 end the temporary roundabout continues to work well. Road works are focused on Napier Rd, preparing that approach to the new roundabout. A section of Napier Rd remains closed to all but residents and vehicles that need to access those addresses. As previously notified this will be in place until mid-year. Drivers are being advised to allow an extra two minutes when travelling through the construction site. SH2 remains open to all traffic, at all times.

In Whakatu, earthworks are underway to extend the current approach to the rail crossing with an additional 400m.

At the Pakowhai Rd end of the project, the construction team’s focus at the moment is on bulk earthworks either side of Karamu Stream.

Residents in Station Rd in Whakatu will continue to see truck traffic carrying clean fill between Pakowhai and the SH2 site. Council asks that drivers entering or exiting driveways on the affected roads take extra care to check for trucks before turning.
