Youth Resilience Study

Helping to build a resilient community into the future is the driver behind a Youth Resilience Study, carried out this year by Hastings District Council.

A survey was carried out using the widely acknowledged Resilience Scale by Gail Wagnild, RN, PhD. Fourteen questions measured the ability of the near 800 respondents to cope with adverse or traumatic events. Just under 70 per cent of the participants were aged between 14 and 16.

The study found that Hastings youth had above average resilience but were interested in building stronger personal links with others, including adults, and getting more information on being drug and alcohol-free.

The study will be re-done in 2019.
