Enhancements to Hastings city centre begin

City Centre SmallThe next phase of ongoing works to further enhance the Hastings city centre is set to kick off today with changes to the Heretaunga Street central mall.

As part of a wider plan to further build on the vibrancy of the city centre, Hastings District Council’s next phase of enhancements will make the most of the mall’s open space and features, providing an oasis for people to take a break.

Councillor Damon Harvey said the Hastings city centre is evolving into an exciting and vibrant place to work, live and play.

“A city centre can no longer be just about retail, but a lifestyle precinct that is the heart of the community. We have some exciting plans to enhance the city centre – both for locals and visitors.

“This is the start of potentially a very exciting time for Hastings; we want to see more people living in the city centre, and the Opera House precinct will also begin to take shape over the next year.  This will hopefully attract new retailers, professional service firms and hospitality providers.”

The Hastings mall improvements will begin today with the removal of selected trees to allow more light into the pedestrian area between retail shops, while allowing other trees to flourish.  Seating will be incorporated around the existing planter boxes, with astroturf used to provide areas for small children to sit and play.

Freestanding chairs and tables will provide more seating options, and can be moved around to accommodate the needs of the multi-use venue, which has been home to the Hastings City Night Market since 2013.

Upgrades to the performance platform will be taking place during autumn and will includes the addition of storage space for use by Council and performers.

Hastings City Business Association General Manager Susan McDade said the association was fully supportive of Hastings District Council’s initiatives to ensure Hastings city centre is a place for everyone to enjoy.

“We are absolutely thrilled with the design plans which are designed to attract more people to stay longer and make better use of the space. The surrounding businesses can’t wait to see the finished result.”
