Celebrating our extraordinary people: Civic Awards 2018

CBD Out About 33For just over 30 years Hastings has been honouring people in the community who go to extraordinary efforts to help make the district a wonderful place to live.

Nominations for the 2018 Hastings District Council Civic Honours Awards open next week. Past recipients have been invited to help launch the opening of nominations on Tuesday (February 27).

The first Hastings Civic Honours were awarded in 1988, and over the last seven years alone more than 60 individuals and groups have been recognised for their efforts.

Mayor Sandra Hazlehurst is looking forward to celebrating the 31st Hastings District Council Civic Honour Awards.

“They are a wonderful opportunity to acknowledge and thank the volunteers who give so selflessly to the community; to show our appreciation of the volunteers’ time and energy put into a chosen cause. In New Zealand, there is a long-standing tradition that regards volunteering as a form of charity, but the best volunteering involves the desire to serve others.”

Mrs Hazlehurst said nominees came from many different walks of life. “We are extremely grateful for the magnificent efforts they put in, and also grateful to the people who take the time to put pen to paper or go online and highlight the amazing work people do for our community.

“We all know someone who is deserving of this award. I urge everyone to put in a nomination for this year’ Civic Honour Awards.”
