Home and farm visits completed

Ninety-one homes in the area worst-hit by rains yesterday have been visited to assess welfare needs and damage to homes.

Seven homes were issued ‘yellow notices’, which meant they had issues that needed to be dealt with before the families could move back in. Those homes were all in the Rissington and Esk Valley area and all issues were related to water damage.

The affected residents were all staying with family, friends or neighbours.

Hastings District Council staff would work with the homeowners as they brought their properties back to a habitable dwelling standard.

Welfare teams assisted people with a range of issues, with a very small number of them requiring food and water .

“For those people, this is a very difficult time. We are focused on giving them the best advice we can, helping where we are able, and putting them in touch with assistance organisations where that is necessary, said Hastings District Council incident controller Raoul Oosterkamp.

“We are, however, very fortunate that that there is not more wide-spread damage.”

He said the Rural Advisory Group met today and were focused on assisting farmers and horticulturalists. “That group is best-placed to understand the issues our rural businesses are facing in the wake of this heavy rain, and will contact us if there is something that Council is potentially able to help with.”

The flooding followed very heavy rainfall. Over 24 hours from just after midnight on March 8 the Glengarry rainfall gauge (Esk Valley area) recorded 312mm of rain; 150mm of that fell over a three hour period.

Hastings mayor Sandra Hazlehurst said the Council’s thoughts were with those who had suffered damage to their homes and properties. “We are also offering practical assistance as we can and, where applicable, putting people in touch with the agencies best place to offer help.

“I do want to thank the volunteers from Civil Defence and Red Cross, who went out with our staff today to help with ascertaining the welfare needs of our people. Without the help of those people, the task would have been much more difficult and would have taken longer.”

People who needed assistance but who had not been contacted by Council should call the 24-hour phone line: 06 871 5000.
