200-plus tyres cleared off Peak

It might have been pelting down, but that did not stop 25 hardy souls taking up the Hastings District Ccouncil’s call to help clean up Te Mata Peak on Sunday.

Council’s environment enhancement officer and event organiser Wendy Beeke was very pleased with the turnout, particularly given the atrocious weather.

The rubbish tally, after several hours of strenuous heaving in the mud and rain, included: more than 200 car tyres, one car engine, one car bonnet, one car door, three bicycles, 30-plus road cones, two wheelie bins, a giant teddy bear, a microwave, a traffic sign, six golf balls, several soccer and rugby balls, numerous beer bottles and lots of broken glass.

Wendy said the Te Mata Peak Trust really appreciated the help to get the main face back into tip top condition, and the farmer on whose land most of the junk fell was equally appreciative.

The rubbish is now sitting in piles, as the persistent rain has meant the ground is too soggy to remove it.

Once the ground has dried out, the rubbish will be removed and anything that can be recycled will be, with the rest taken to the landfill.

“Now to educate those throwing stuff off the peak on the error of their ways,” said Wendy.
