Sports centre ready for the next decades

Hastings Sports CentreA major makeover of the Hastings Sports Centre has been completed. It has reopened and its freshly painted walls are ringing with the sound of energetic children at an after school programme.

The biggest changes facility users will notice are in the gym. The new fully-automated ventilation system measures the amount of C02 in the air and, as necessary, opens vent panels, starts air extraction technology, and opens windows. New heating and lights have also been installed in the gym, and the floor has a new lacquer finish. To cope with events, the power supply to the facility has been upgraded so generators are no longer needed to supplement the supply, and fibre has been installed.

A celebration of the four-month long $1 million upgrade is being held on Monday, April 9, from 10am to 2pm. A sausage sizzle, open gym, badminton, table tennis and basketball will all be on offer.

The building’s last upgrade was in the 1990s and its facilities and systems were no longer fit-for-purpose, nor did it meet modern safety regulations, said Hastings District Council social and cultural development committee chairman Malcolm Dixon.

The work, including new external fire escape stairs from the top floor, brings the building up to current fire safety standards, and earthquake strengthening had been completed.

Minor works included some painting, re-carpeting and the replacement of mirrors in changing rooms and bathrooms.

More than 1100 people a week walk through the doors of the centre to attend programmes and events, ranging from after school activities to chess tournaments to business functions.

“This is one of our very important indoor community facilities that caters for a range of ages, stages and abilities,” said Mr Dixon. “The original gym was built in the 1960s, it had a major refurbish in the 1990s including an extension, and now has received a makeover that should take it through the next 30-plus years. That’s a great result and we can all be very pleased with the way the work on this community-owned asset has been completed.”
