Community groups given a helping hand

Nourished for NilSurf lifesaving, a food redistribution programme, biking for the blind, holiday food parcels and community media were among the services to receive funds from this year’s Contestable Funding round.

$245,500 was allocated to 31 non-profit groups providing services to the community. Hastings District Council’s community grants subcommittee had a budget of $245,400. It received 46 applications to the fund, adding up to $529,633.

Committee chairman Malcolm Dixon said the result of this year’s round was very pleasing, with so many groups having access to funds to carry on their work or start new projects. He said it was always very difficult to make choices between such large numbers of worthy applicants doing vital work out in the community.

“This year’s applications for funding totalled more than double what we had available to allocate.  Councillors involved spent a considerable amount of time assessing and discussing the value of each application.

“The guidelines we have ensure we carefully assess every application to achieve the best we can for the community and the groups.”

There were very clear criteria the applications needed to align with. Projects needed to fulfil at least one of the following: Help youth into training or jobs; assist businesses to provide local jobs; provide help and advice to the aging and/or the disadvantaged; make improvements in the district that will attract visitors, students and/or businesses; reduce littering, wasting resources and/or crime; promote participation in recreation, arts and cultural activities.

Successful applications also had to show they could contribute significantly to the project through fundraising outside of Council.

Hastings Mayor Sandra Hazlehurst said this year there were some outstanding projects that would make a real difference to people’s lives.  “The grants supported projects that fitted with Council’s priorities for building a safe, liveable and sustainable community.

“All of our community benefits from the services provided by these non-profit groups. We can’t thank them enough, and we are pleased to be able to help with these grants.

“We will be very keen to see how these projects go over the next year.”

Each year applications to the Contestable Grant fund open on February 1 and close on March 31 for funds available in the following financial year. For more information see the Contestable Grants Fund page of our website
