Rotary offers Napier Road tree help

Havelock North Rotary will be looking to adopt a new community project to plant new trees along Napier Road.

The club’s support comes as work on the Havelock North section of the new water main progresses.  Work in Napier Road is scheduled for Tuesday 5 June.

The water main project will see a large pipe being laid in the existing grassed central median and as previously advised, this will mean the removal of around 30 trees.  The trees are variety of species including gleditsia, plane, melia and liquid amber.

Hastings District Council representatives met today with the Havelock North Rotary president, to discuss the tree removal and plans for the replanting of the central islands with new trees along Napier Road.

Hastings District Council Chief Executive Ross McLeod says while both Council and Havelock North Rotary agree the tree removal is regrettable, it is necessary to enable the laying of the new water pipeline to Havelock North.  “The presence of multiple underground services, including sewer, storm water, telecommunications, water and power has meant that only one alignment is possible without risking damage to vital services.”

Havelock North Rotary representatives have viewed the underground services plans, and they understand the need to remove the very trees that the Rotary club had been involved in planting back in 1973.

Council officers have consulted with a local tree specialist who has previously raised concerns about the looming tree felling.  He has seen the services plan and the technical constraints, and understands the need for removal.

On replacement tree options, he has suggested that the loss of these trees has presented an opportunity to install a line of new trees that will in time present a spectacular streetscape.

Mr McLeod says Council is keen to involve Havelock North Rotary in the selection and planting of the new trees.  “The club has already indicated they would be keen to consider adopting this new tree planting project as a Rotary Community project for 2018, 45 years on from their last effort.”

He says it is regrettable that the gifted trees are destined to be felled. “However, a partnership with Havelock North Rotary presents an exciting opportunity for an even more impressive streetscape to be restored, while ensuring a safe and sufficient water supply for Havelock North residents which is Council’s number one priority.”

The suggested tree options and a potential joint planting day will be presented to the Havelock North Rotary Club’s next meeting in June.
