Health check-up for Nikau Vessel

NikauOne of Hastings’ most prominent artworks is about to get a thorough going-over.

The Nikau Vessel, a three metre high work by Auckland sculptor Virginia King, will undergo maintenance and cleaning from next week.

It will be removed from its site for the check. Among other things, its ‘legs’ will be tested for strength and its plumbing for any age-related damage. Once any repairs are made and it is thoroughly clean it will be reinstated.

From Monday, safety fences will surround the work as initial inspections are undertaken, with the removal expected to occur later in the week.

Made from aluminium and steel, the sculpture was installed in 2002. Its cost was paid for with a bequest to the city from the estate of William Alan Bell. It was part of a revitalisation of the city centre, which included the installation of public artworks in line with Hastings District Council’s Landmarks policy.

At the time of its installation, the artist said it was inspired by the region’s hills, fertile plains and produce. The idea evolved to include a deco-styled radiating nikau to reflect the city’s architectural heritage.

The project is expected to take about four weeks, depending on the maintenance required.
