Track changes in Tainui

Tainui Small2The 3.3 kilometres of tracks in popular Tainui Reserve in Havelock North will be upgraded in response to community input, setting the standard for walking tracks across the district.

The tracks most in need of work will be tackled within two years, starting with the paths off Keith Sands Grove and Tainui Dr and the Ridge Link track, with the remaining 10 undergoing work over the following six years. The project is expected to cost $152,000.

The tracks will be realigned and widened and steps reconfigured where necessary. They will then be topped with a compacted soil and gravel mix that will be comfortable for walkers, provide grip, and be long-lasting. They will meet National Track Standards, also used by organisations such as the Department of Conservation.

The plan for the tracks stemmed from a request from the community last year, asking Hastings District Council to review the path surfaces in the 15.7 hectare reserve. Users said the gravel surface was too rough and uneven.

Hastings mayor Sandra Hazlehurst said Council was pleased to get that feedback, which led to the setting up of a care group for the reserve and a full review of its tracks.

“Tainui Reserve is well-used and much-loved. Council has listened to the feedback from the Havelock North community and acted on it. I have no doubt these new tracks will be welcomed by users.”

The care group had developed into a very valuable volunteer force, she said.

“They are doing wonderful work planting native plants within the reserve, which have been supplied by Council.”

A New Zealand track specialist was contracted to prepare an overview of the work required. Council reviewed the report and approved the work last week [June 28].

Signs indicating track length and walk times will be erected.
