Alcohol sellers pass sales check

alcoholChecks on Hastings businesses selling alcohol have resulted in a 100 per cent pass rate.

Two Controlled Purchase Operations, carried out to test whether owners and staff are obeying the law, saw no liquor sold to underage customers.

In the latest operation on Friday, two young volunteers posed as customers at three bottle stores, one supermarket and three bars and asked to buy alcohol. None of the outlets sold products to them.

About 10 weeks earlier, two different volunteers posing as customers went into two bottle stores and seven bars in Hastings. Again, none were sold alcohol.

Hastings District Licensing Committee chairman Tania Kerr said the results were very pleasing.

“There is a very strong focus on limiting alcohol-related harm so ensuring our youngsters cannot purchase alcohol is very important.

“Every checked outlet followed the rules and this is an excellent result. It shows that Hastings’ licensed premises are actively complying with the law; and points to the success of the Host Responsibility Training that health authorities, police and Hastings’ licensing inspectors provide to licensees each year.”

Under the Sale and Supply of Alcohol Act 2012, alcohol licensing inspectors, police and health authorities must monitor licences and enforce the Act. A part of that is carrying out ‘Controlled Purchase Operations’ to test outlets.

Volunteers must have parental permission and are interviewed to ensure they are suitable and do not look older than 18.
