Celebrating achievement: Youth Potential Awards

YPAsEleven teens and one group will receive Youth Potential Awards next week.

The eighth annual awards will be presented at a ceremony in the chambers of Hastings District Council on July 11.

The awards recognise nga tohu aumangea, or resilience, hard work, commitment and leadership, in the knowledge that the recipients will serve as an inspiration to others.

The individuals receiving awards are all Hastings young people aged 13 to 19, who are enrolled in a programme run by an organisation or group working with young people, and are still at school.

Mayor Sandra Hazlehurst says: "It is important that we celebrate the success of our young people.  We want all of them to reach their full potential.  It’s wonderful to see the support of their whanau, schools and community organisations who provide our young people with the encouragement and self-belief needed for this to happen.”

The categories are:

Rangatahi: This award recognises efforts of a young person in continuing with school despite overcoming some adversity and/or hardship at some point during their young lives. The Youth Potential Awards acknowledges them as rangatahi who continues to positively engage in both school and their community.

Roopu:  This award recognises a group or agency working with young people or a group of young people who are achieving collectively.

The evening will begin with a welcome from Councillor Henare O'Keefe, followed by an address by Hastings mayor Sandra Hazlehurst and guest speakers Glen Varcoe and Alayna Hokianga.
