Long-time rural community board chair stands down

Peter Kay

Long-time Hastings District Council rural community board member Peter Kay was farewelled by the council last week, having tendered his resignation at the end of October.

First elected in 2004 as the member for the Maraekakaho subdivision of the Hastings District Rural Community Board, Mr Kay was elected chairman of the board in 2008 – a position he retained until the end of his tenure.

Mr Kay attended the last council meeting of the year last Thursday and at that meeting Hastings mayor Sandra Hazlehurst said he had shown outstanding leadership and wisdom during his time on the board, and had worked tirelessly.

“His leadership has been very valued around our table and we want to say a big thank you for his contribution.

“Peter has been inspirational and hugely dedicated to serving his community,” said Mrs Hazlehurst.

Fellow board member Mick Lester (Poukawa subdivision) was also present at the meeting and noted Mr Kay’s amazing ability to talk to people.

“I always remember the respect and co-operation Peter got from staff – he got a tremendous amount of support.”

Mr Lester also acknowledged his work as a hearings commissioner during the district plan review, and added that it was thanks to Mr Kay that there were now recycling depots in a number of country locations, which had been supported beyond expectations.

Mr Kay said it had been a pleasure serving the local community over the years.

“It has been a great experience most of the time – it’s a bit of a team sport, you might be the captain but it’s the team behind you that achieves the final result.”

Mr Kay will be replaced by Hastings horticulturalist Lesley Wilson, who was nominated for appointment to the board on December 3, and Tutira subdivision board member Sue Maxwell has taken the role of chair.
