Winter planting programme mostly complete in time for Spring rain

IMG 0500 Small

The Hastings District Council’s winter planting season is drawing to a close with more than 20,000 plants put in place around the district over the last few months.

The planting takes place on roadsides, in reserves, in roundabouts and public gardens and is a mix of completely new planting, plant renewals and gap filling.

One of the biggest projects this season was planting along the new Te Ara Kahikatea route and its roundabouts, comprising almost half the plants installed over winter.

Most recently more than 4000 plants have been placed around the Pakowhai roundabout - predominantly flax, and also oioi (also known as jointed wire brush) and kowhai (reflecting the signage to the Pakowhai Regional Park).

With planting complete on all the shoulders, the final part will be to plant the middle section of the roundabout.

These plants are all low growing so drivers retain good visibility, and as with most such plantings the species selected have been chosen for their hardiness and drought tolerance.

Heading into the Spring growth season, the final ingredient to ensure they flourish will be the arrival of some seasonal rain.
