First China competition gifts arrive

IMG 7893 Small

The first of the gifts that are the heart of the Amazing China-Hastings Year of Tourism secondary school competition have arrived, with at least 20 more expected.

The first three students to match all of the gifts to their home region in China will win all-expenses paid escorted trips to China. To fit in with school timetables the competition will be run in February, with the contents from China remaining under wraps until then.

The competition is one of a number of Hastings-China themed competitions run by Hastings District councillor Kevin Watkins since 2006, most recently the 2018 Amazing China Face Race. This one is “extra special”, he says, as it has been configured to fit in with the national China-New Zealand Year of Tourism 2019.

That Hastings project, which is supported by Tourism Minister Kelvin Davis, the Ministry of Tourism, and the Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment, is designed to increase cultural understanding and relationships between China and Hastings, leading to expanded tourism and trade opportunities. The project has had “fantastic” media coverage in China.

Hastings and all of the participating regions in China (20 out of 33 so far) are exchanging gifts, with the participating Chinese regions asked to select something that specifically represents their area. Hastings’ gifts to China included a koha from the Hawke’s Bay Woodturners Guild; exquisitely turned bowls made from timbers grown in Hawke’s Bay.
