Keirunga Gardens draft RMP hearings this week

Keirunga Cottage

More than 30 submissions to the draft Keirunga Gardens Reserve Management Plan (RMP) will be heard this week, which will help guide the future management and development of this popular open space over the next 10 years.

In preparing the plan, council sought feedback from the public, and received responses regarding anything from the upgrade of heritage buildings to signage, planting and track maintenance.

From this, and following workshops held with stakeholders, a draft plan was prepared and adopted by council in October last year, after which it went out for public consultation.

Thirty-four submissions were received, either supportive of the draft plan or calling for amendments to it.

In general, the plan sought actions such as upgrading council buildings in the park, increased playground equipment, increased access into and through the reserve, the retention of the existing woodland and increased biodiversity throughout the park.

Eco Districts subcommittee chair Ann Redstone said all the submissions would be considered at this week’s meeting (March 11).

“It has been great to hear the community’s thoughts and ideas throughout this process, and our committee will be analysing those that are calling for changes to be made, and make our recommendations before sending the plan to council for ratification.”

The proposed budget for the capital works programme had initially been $1.47m, but was reduced to $1.125m.

Depending on whether some of the proposed amendments are adopted by the subcommittee, this figure might increase to $1.26m over 10 years.

Any financial commitment will be subject to review through ongoing draft Long Term Plan processes.

The aim is that the draft RMP will be adopted by council’s strategy and policy committee in April and once adopted the delivery of the 10-year action plan will begin in the next financial year.
