The Sphere lands in Albert Square

The Sphere install

The Sphere has landed.

Visitors to Hastings city have a new installation to enjoy, with the arrival of Kōtahu & The Sphere at Albert Square today where it will remain until November 1.

This stunning work has been created by local artists Fish Aberadi, constructed with repurposed materials, including timber from the deconstructed chicken sheds in Haumoana, and a chassis and slew ring sourced from an old digger in Palmerston North.

Illuminated from within it channels thepotential of discarded, static materials into an in-motion sculpture that spins on its axis from 8am to midnight each day.

Hastings District Council city centre activation officer Andrea Taaffe said it was exciting to bring this artwork into the public arena for the community to enjoy.

“It’s been a tough few weeks with the challenges of COVID-19 and to be able to enliven the city centre with this fantastic creation is really uplifting.

“It had a previous outing at this year’s popular Walk of Wonders event, if you missed it now is your chance to enjoy it when you next come into town.”

Kōtahu & The Sphere is brought to the community with the assistance of Council’s Vibrancy Fund – to find out more about the fund and apply go to www.hastingsdc.govt.nz/vibrancyfund from October 1, 2021.
