Level 3 water restrictions for Waimārama

With the busy summer season approaching, and with it the annual influx of visitors, Level 3 water restrictions are being introduced at Waimārama this week.

Hastings District Council three waters manager Steve Cave said the restrictions were being applied from today in order to conserve water for the weeks ahead.

“While it has been a wet spring, and as a result water use is not as high as usual, the Waimārama population swells over summer, which puts pressure on the springs that supply water to the township.

“By limiting water use it will help ensure everyone has enough water over summer.”

The Level 3 restriction will be introduced on December 21 and applies to all homes in Waimārama that are connected to a public water supply.

Under Level 3, sprinkler use is banned - only hand-held hoses can be used on alternate days between the hours of 6am and 8am, and 7pm and 9pm.

No further restrictions are being applied to the rest of Hastings, which remains at Level 1 at this stage due to moderate use, the river levels being high and the forecast indicating more rain over the coming weeks.

Council will continue to monitor the situation, and advise the community if there’s any change.

In the meantime, water conservation is still encouraged to reduce the impact of high water use on the aquifer, rivers and streams.
