Petal Power brings people together

An initiative to get people into their gardens and proud of where they live has had great buy-in with up to 100 entries received for the Hastings District Council Petal Power competition.
Open to residents of the nine senior housing complexes owned by Hastings District Council across Hastings, Flaxmere and Havelock North the competition involved people vying to grow the best looking gardens.
To inspire would-be competitors, the council supplied residents with packs containing goodies such as garden gloves, coffee packs, garden fertiliser and Petal Power pens.
They also received a #Hastings Proud gnome to put in their garden ahead of judging that would begin on October 22.
Cambridge Court resident Lynn Roberts said she bought a selection of flower and vegetable seedlings on special to get her garden growing.
Something of a green thumb, she had not only planted a garden around her unit, but also branched out to grow vegetables against the fence bordering the complex, for herself and other residents to pick from.
In her garden she had anything from bok choy to broad beans, petunias, salvia and mini carnations.
“I have always been into gardening, I prefer vegetables to flowers though - I like going out and picking something out of the garden knowing it’s got no sprays on it.”
The council senior housing team would be judging the gardens over Labour Weekend and awarding prizes for the first, second and third individual placegetters, as well as one overall complex winner.
The prizewinners would have input into their prizes to ensure they received something they could use – whether it be the likes of a shade sail or a picnic table.
The idea of the competition was to make people proud of where they lived and to bring them together, something it had already achieved, said group manager community facilities and programmes Alison Banks.
“It’s also playing a large part in council’s approach to civic pride.
“This has resulted in neighbours getting together and working with each other, and having a bit of fun.”
The winners will be announced on November 7.
