Where can a dog be walked off-leash in a public place?

In a designated off-lead exercise area and in rural areas, as prescribed by Hastings District Council. For a list of off-leash areas see: Dog exercise areas.

When must a person in charge of a dog carry a leash?

At all times in public areas. In on-leash areas the dog must be leashed; in off-leash areas the dog walker must carry a leash. While a dog is in an off-leash area it must remain under the control of the walker at all times.

What are the rules and regulations around barking dogs?

Barking is a perfectly natural behaviour however, dogs are not allowed to bark in a loud and persistent manner, creating a nuisance.

What areas are prohibited for dogs in the Hastings District?

Council's administration building (Lyndon Rd, Hastings), libraries, swimming pools, playgrounds, sports grounds,  Rangaiika Beach (between Ocean Beach and Cape Kidnappers).

What must an owner do when the ownership of a dog has changed or the address that it regularly stays at has changed?

Within 14 days give written notice to Council giving details of the residential address of the new owner and the address at which the dog will be kept. Complete the Change of Ownership form here.
