Burning at night
Fires burning at night can be mistaken for uncontrolled fires. Before burning contact Fire And Emergency New Zealand on 0800 658 628 or email firstname.lastname@example.org to check if a permit is required.
To report outdoor fire smoke nuisance from a residential property in Hastings contact Hastings District Council, phone 981 5000. To report outdoor smoke nuisance from a industrial, commercial or rural property, contact Hawke's Bay Regional Council's pollution hotline, phone 0800 108 838. Note: During a Total Fire Ban report all fires to the emergency services, phone 111.
Parks and Reserves
Fires may be lit in Council-provided fire places during Open and Restricted Fire Seasons only.
A permanent Fire Ban is in force on the following beaches and adjacent public areas; all Mahia Peninsula Beaches, Waipatiki Beach and all Central Hawke's Bay Beaches.
Fires can be lit on other beaches during Open Fire Seasons provided the fire is not left unattended and is completely extinguished with water. A permit is required during a Restricted Fire Season and no fires can be lit during a Fire Ban.

General burning rules
- be at least five meters clear of any flammable material, vegetation, fence or building
- not be lit in windy conditions or when strong winds are forecast
- not be left unattended
- be controlled and extinguishing equipment such as a garden hose must be readily available
- be completely extinguished with water
