The Geographic Information System (GIS) is council's on-line mapping tool. It can be used to display, manipulate, and analyse geographic information. GIS can be used to visualise data from databases, allowing easier interpretation of that data.
The Survey module contains key Contour data, includes the 2009 1m Contours and Spot Heights (supplied by NZ Aerial mapping), and the Land Information NZ Survey and Benchmarks from 2012. For more information on the Benchmarks, refer to the Land Information NZ Data Service (https://data.linz.govt.nz).
Council provides some GIS data via an Open Data Portal. From here, you can view the data and download Council GIS data into Shapefile or CSV formats. This data, which includes underground services, kerb-lines, District Plan zones and contours, is available under the Creative Commons licence agreement.
