Following an emergency meeting this morning with Ministry of Education, and the Principals and Board Chairs of Te Mata School, Havelock North Primary, Lucknow School ,Havelock North Intermediate and Havelock North High School, we have reassessed the health and safety situation in our schools and have made the collective decision to close the school for a period of 2 days, being Tuesday16th and Wednesday17th August.
Section 65E(1) of the Education Act provides for schools to close in an emergency situation of this nature.
We have reassessed the information available today and have made this decision based on the following:
There has been increase in scale and an escalation of symptomatic students and staff with all schools having close to 50% of their children sick and significant staff numbers ill. These numbers continue to increase as children and staff present with symptoms.
The School Board of Trustees is additionally concerned about its ability to adequately staff the school.
The Board continues to work towards providing assurance that the health and safety of staff and students will not be affected further.
Schools will be reassessing our positions on Wednesday afternoon and we would ask that parents and caregivers check the school’s website and social media to be informed of the situation for the remainder of the week.
