Unremarkable buildings you did not even know were there have been given a new lease on life thanks to Council's Facade Enhancement Scheme, and the commitment of building owners and tenants.
The Facade Enhancement Scheme is a Hastings District Council initiative to recognise heritage value by encouraging building owners and tenants to upgrade the exterior of their buildings.
The Scheme has been operating since September 1993 and to date over 100 buildings have been enhanced with the scheme’s assistance.
The Scheme provides grant assistance for the painting and enhancement of building façades of architectural and historical significance primarily within the Central Business District. However buildings along key traffic routes and within suburban commercial shopping areas can also be considered for a grant.
The aim of the scheme is to provide financial assistance and encouragement to owners/tenants to:
How much grant assistance is determined by the Urban Design & Parks Planner, based on the facade size, colour scheme costs and the profile and significance of the building.
Council has $16,000 for the scheme in this year's budget.

The Council encourages business and property owners to take the opportunity to be part of the continuing revitalisation of the district's commercial areas by taking advantage of the Council operated scheme.
