History

The Domain, registered in 1888 under the Public Domains Act, was initially the Havelock Recreation Ground.

In 1921 the Domain Swimming Baths opened with a single pool built on the Domain. This was later extended to include a second pool as part of the province’s centennial project in 1958.

From the 1930s, the Domain was largely used for rugby and cricket and in 1938, the Eric Phillips designed Pavilion opened to the public. In the early days, the cricket pavilion
was a landmark and an important community resource. Historically it has been used for meetings by a variety of community groups including swimming, tennis and football clubs.
The pavilion was built overlooking the original cricket field before Karanema Drive was constructed and severed the land.

Following adoption of the Havelock North Village Green Reserve Management Plan in 2016, the pavilion was relocated to the other side of the new playground and made available for public hire.
