Mai Manu bombing comp is back!

Mai Manu 3

After making a splash last summer, the Mai Manu competition is back on December 2 to test the bombing skills of potential manu masters.

About 100 people entered the event last year – held at Havelock North Village Pool where it has the water depth and space for people to “free the manu”.

Former Flaxmere councillor Peleti Oli is back on judging duties this year, alongside Hads Te Huia (Bomblife New Zealand bombing ambassador) and said he was very excited that Hastings District Council and Aquatics Hastings were putting on another Mai Manu Bomb Comp.

“Last year’s competition was a great success. It was the first in Hastings’ history so it’s good to be officially celebrating the Manu again.”

“The Bombing standard last year was really high, and we are looking forward to the same again this year if not even better!”

Joining the local competitors will be the bomb squad from Gisborne who are travelling down to take part and Peleti said he was looking forward to selecting the 2023 Hastings Bomb Squad that will compete in the Gisborne/Tairawhiti Bomb Comp.

“Hastings has its own manu flavour, which is lots of air then into a nice-shaped tuck, so I will be keeping my eye out for that signature Hastings King Tuck, and looking for style, flair, character, and most of all creativity.

“Stay safe and see you all there!”

Havelock North Village Pool will be open from 10am to 6pm on Saturday, December 2 and the competition will start at 11am.

There will be free entry all day and the giant inflatable obstacle course will be set up. Everyone is welcome to come along whether competing or spectating. Bring a picnic and make a day of it.

Pre-register for the competition at aquaticshastings.co.nz and be in to win some titles as well as great prizes from sponsors including Stirling Sports Hastings, Hustle Surf & Moto, Speedway and Splash Planet.
