Christmas comes to Albert Square

Santas Workshop projection

Albert Square is being transformed into Christmas Central from today [December 15] until December 25 with displays and activities that will enchant and entertain.

Every evening, from sundown till late, a “Santa’s workshop” projected animation, designed by creative arts studio Vesica Aotearoa, will transport visitors into the magical world of busy elves creating, wrapping and despatching gifts with their quirky state-of-the-art machine.

This year, the animated journey has been extended to six minutes with the addition of new contraptions, an expanded workshop and a launchpad for Santa's sleigh.

The experience is best viewed from 8.30pm so feed the little ones, wrap them up and bring them down to be amazed.

On December 15, and then from December 18 to 21, from 11am to 1pm, people will be able to take part in the festive dressing of four giant wooden Christmas trees. Grab some paint and embellish the heart-warming decorations to create a festive centrepiece.

This activity is also happening on the evening of December 21, adding to a magical line-up of visual wonders, musical entertainment and aerial feats for one special night – running from 6pm to 8.30pm.

Hawke’s Bay soul songstress Margot Pierard will be there adding her distinctive style to some classic Christmas carols, and Cherry Boom will captivate with an aerial performance that will add to the festive atmosphere.

Hot chocolate and coffee will be available throughout the evening and Rush Munro’s will be open to purchase their tasty offerings.

Things get even sweeter with free pavlova on offer until it runs out.

Hastings District Council events operations manager Andrea Taaffe said the activities had something for everyone.

“Hastings District Council is delighted to expand Christmas in the Hastings CBD by bringing world class creativity to our city centre.”

These activities are being presented with the support of the City Centre Activation Fund, which is used to create magical, joyful moments that attract and bring people together in the city centre.
