Hastings city centre is set to become an even bigger ‘hot spot’ with Hastings District Council announcing an exciting list of new businesses for the soon-to-re-open Municipal Building on Heretaunga Street.
The Municipal Building has been closed since 2014, undergoing significant earthquake strengthening and restoration work. Undoubtedly one of Hastings’ most iconic buildings, the Municipal Building is a Category One Historic Building, and is the final piece of the overall Toitoi-Hawke’s Bay Arts and Events Centre project that began in 2016. It has included the covering of the atrium and a revamp of the Hawke’s Bay Opera House.
Set to open mid-year, the Municipal Building will feature Craft & Social, a new eatery and bar, Cellar 495 boutique wine cellar and bar, Long Island delicatessen and takeaway foods, Ākina - a contemporary dealer gallery, and the new, revamped Hastings i-SITE and Visitor Information Centre that will incorporate the Toitoi ticketing box office.
Council group manager corporate Bruce Allan, who is also the project lead for the Municipal Building restoration, said Council was delighted at the range and quality of the businesses that had signed up as foundation tenants.
“We have secured world-class businesses run by people who are experienced leaders in their field and Council looks forward to introducing them in detail in the coming months.”
Mayor Sandra Hazlehurst said the exciting announcement heralded another fantastic step forward for Hastings.
“Our city centre already has a stellar line-up of hospitality and retail businesses and we know the addition of these exciting new additions in the Municipal Building will appeal to Hawke’s Bay locals and visitors, and further enhance our great central city offering.”
Hawke’s Bay locals wanting to know more about the Municipal Building opening can follow Toitoi Arts & Event Centre on Facebook or Instagram (@toitoivenues) or sign-up to the monthly ‘My Hastings’ newsletter.
