Event Recycling Bins

Waste Event Bins 4We’re on a mission to help our community reduce waste at events. It can be tricky knowing where to start. To help make it easy, we have event recycling bins that can be hired for community events in the Hastings district.

Download our event recycling bin information sheet

What do you get?

  • Recycling bins (maximum of nine bins)
  • Trailer to transport the bins
  • Signs for the bins
  • Teardrop “hangarua / recycling” flags to help indicate where your bins are
  • Litter picks to help keep the recycling bins correctly sorted
  • Glass crates and crate trolley(s) - if collecting glass
  • Bin liners
  • Instructional guides for your waste volunteers/staff

The bin types available are:

  • Recycling bin (#1, 2 and 5 plastics & cans) (240L)
  • Food waste bin (120L)
  • Rubbish bin (240L)
  • Glass crates 45L (colour separated – brown, clear, green)

Choose any nine bins to suit your event.

What you’ll need to do

  • Have staff or volunteers stationed on the bins for the duration of your event. They will help people choose the right bin for their items. (Without this, your bins will get too contaminated, and the items you collect won’t be recycled.)
  • Have a secure location to store the bins and trailer.
  • Sort waste properly during and after your event. We will provide guidance prior to the event, but this is your responsibility on the day.
  • Group your bins together (as per image below) and use the bin signage provided. We will give guidance.

The options

We have two different hire options. Our team will help you throughout the booking process. Both options require the hirer to collect the trailer and bins themselves.

Option A
SELF SERVICE
FREE (+$100 bond)
Option B
PICK UP
$100 (+ $100 bond)

Return bins empty.

You’ll pick up the bins and trailer, take them to your event and bring them back. You’ll separate recyclables and food scraps during your event. When you return everything, you’ll sort your recycling at the recycling depot. You’ll pay for your rubbish disposal costs.

*As a guide, expect approximately $10 per 25kg rubbish bin.

*A $10 fee per food waste bin applies for this option. This covers the cost for a waste company to collect it from us for composting.

Return bins full.

You’ll pick up the bins and trailer and take them to your event. You’ll separate recyclables and food scraps during your event.

When you drop everything back, we’ll take your pre-sorted recycling and rubbish and put it in the appropriate place.

This option includes rubbish costs for up to 100kg of rubbish (approximately 4x large wheelie bins). Any rubbish costs over this will be deducted from the bond.

*Large recycling volumes may be subject to additional handling costs.

* prices include GST

FAQs

Collect the trailer and bins from Henderson Road Transfer Station, 121 Henderson Road, Flaxmere. Our staff will meet you at the agreed collection time. You can return the trailer anytime within opening hours (Mon – Sat, 7.45am - 4.30pm and Sunday 9.45am - 4.30pm).

You can hire up to nine bins. As our aim is divert waste from landfill, you should hire more recycling and food scrap bins than rubbish bins. If you need more bins have a chat with us. There is no minimum number of bins.

Yes. The trailer has been designed just for these bins. It means you can transport them and the signage safely without risking spilling the bins on your journey.

This will depend on the contamination levels of what you’ve collected. This is why you need to have staff or volunteers stationed at the bins for the full duration of your event, to help ensure the right items go in the right bins. If everything is correctly sorted, then yes, it’ll be sent off for recycling or composting. If it’s too dirty or incorrectly sorted, it can’t be recycled and it will be sent to landfill.

We need at least two weeks’ notice for bookings. To secure the dates you need, we recommend contacting us on reducewaste@hdc.govt.nz as soon as you know about your event.

Maximum hire is four days. We need to have them available for other groups to use.

The dimensions of the trailer are 1500mm wide x 3000mm length, with a 1500mm high cage. A 1, 7/8” tow ball is required. Vehicles towing the trailer will require a towbar with a tow rating of 2000kg or greater.

See NZTA’s guide to safe loading and towing for light vehicles

We’ll have a chat with you about the types of items you’re expecting at your event. Depending on your situation and goals, we’ll help you choose the right bins for your event. Email reducewaste@hdc.govt.nz.

As long as the trailer and bins come back undamaged, yes. It can take a few days to process the refund.

The bond has been set up to cover any damage to the bins, trailer or signs. The service costs cover staff time and resources for sorting recycling.

No. We suggest groups check their organisation’s insurance policy, and recommend that your organisation has insurance to tow trailers, as domestic vehicle policies do not cover accidents whilst towing hire trailers. More detail on liability is in our ‘terms and conditions of hire’. More detail on liability is in our terms & conditions of hire.
