There is just about no part of our lives as residents of Hastings that are not touched by Council; from putting in a shed in the back yard, a new toilet in at home or taking the kids to the park, to turning on the tap for a drink of water, or strolling down a footpath to go swimming at a local pool.

Below is a list of many of the facilities, projects and initiatives Council teams are involved in, each of them involving multiple steps and decisions and, of course, requiring funding.

Decisions on where Council will spend ratepayers' money to ensure services expected by our residents are delivered are made through Annual Plan and Long-Term Plan processes. These are public processes and always include public consultation.

Roads:

New roads, road rebuilding and maintenance, rural roadside mowing; culvert clearing, traffic measurement and management; road closures, street cleaning, footpath maintenance, street design, roads in new developments . . .

Water:

Drinking water treatment and supply, wastewater management, stormwater management, pipe repairs and replacements, new water infrastructure . . .

Waste:

Kerbside recycling, landfill and transfer station management, waste reduction and recycling education, rural recycling, specialised waste recycling (eg demolition, Hazmobile and electronic), community initiatives funding management, support for partner business (eg HB Environment Centre, Re-Source, Nourished 4 Nil) . . 

Outdoor spaces:

Parks and reserves management and maintenance, playground maintenance and redevelopment, sports park management and maintenance, new parks planning, city pocket parks planning and maintenance, events on parks bookings, public building management and maintenance, cemeteries and crematorium, street trees, city centre art and installations, façade enhancement, support for Mitre 10 Sports Park . . .

Planning and regulations:

Building Consents, Resource Consents, car parking management and ticketing, dog control and registration, public health and business licensing, alcohol licensing, district planning, long term planning, community planning, central city vibrancy planning, annual reports, bylaws, planning for residential and commercial growth, property information and regulation, legal advice . . .

Community-owned facilities:

Three libraries, art gallery, Toitoi Hawke’s Bay Arts and Events Centre, Splash Planet, 220 senior housing units, four public swimming pools, two community centres, sports centre, two isites, parks buildings, Council offices . . .

Community services and programmes:

Customer services call centre, public information and communication, youth employment and potential programmes, Neighbourhood Support, new resident information, community initiatives grants, City Assist . . .

Events:

Citizenship ceremonies, community events (Blossom Festival, Carols in Cornwall, Lighting of the Osmanthus Gardens, Taste Hastings etc), major events support (eg Horse of the Year, A&P Show, HB Marathon), event attraction . . .

Major projects and economic development:

Housing build projects, attracting business to Hastings, seawall builds, major construction projects (eg new museum building, Waiaroha, Tomoana Showgrounds purchase and upgrade) . . .

Internal:

Mana whenua relationships, democracy management (meetings, agendas minutes, official responses etc), mayor and councillor support and information, IT systems and support, financial services (rates, budgeting and procurement), staff recruitment, training and support, internal communications, health and safety .  .
